11kV and 22kV Distribution Design - Underground

Tangibl completed a design package for installation of a new underground conduit and manhole system. The work was required due to a major highway relocation project in one of the largest cities in New England.

The proposed highway realignment created a new exit ramp in the utility corridor adjacent to one of the client utility’s substations. This substation was in the central business district, near a tidal river. Furthermore, a service road currently fed from existing ramps and adjacent to the river was going to be replaced with a walkway promenade. Finally, other utilities had proposed underground facilities in the area, including infrastructure to support a flood control system for storm and wastewater.

The project provided our client the opportunity to design a conduit and manhole system not only for existing circuits at their substation, but also to provide a route for future circuits from a planned, new substation that will ultimately replace the 100-year-old facility and associated infrastructure. Our work involved creating design documents for review by the state highway department’s consultant, consistent with the client utility’s design and construction standards.

In addition to providing design documents, we were charged with resolving conflicts with other utilities. Manhole inspections were required to verify the feasibility of the proposed duct banks’ entry into existing manholes. The project was complicated by the older infrastructure in the city, the density of 11kV distribution and 22kV distribution supply circuits, and the presence of tidal water in most manholes.

Drawing deliverables were provided both on paper and electronically in the client’s CAD format. As-built diagrams of each existing manhole were created. Site plans showing scope of the project and section cuts provided an overview of the project. Individual duct bank profiles were presented by cut section, along with before/after manhole details for existing manholes, and conduit entry into new, precast manholes. On occasion, field conditions within manholes were found at variance with maps and records. Tangibl worked with the client to devise alternatives to design details and still maintain the intent of the overall design.
